STATEMENT:
CFHK on the arrests of US citizens Joey Siu and Tsela Zoksang in Greece for protesting against Winter Olympic Games in Beijing and China rule in Tibet
18 October 2021

The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong (CFHK) is concerned at the arrest of US citizens Joey Siu and Tsela Zoksang on Sunday for protesting at the Acropolis in Greece against the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing and calling for freedom in Tibet.

While the two activists were calling for the boycott of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, Siu and Zoksang unfurled a Tibetan flag and a banner proclaiming “Free Hong Kong Revolution”.

Though CFHK understands that both were released on Monday without charge and with no further action taken, such acts will only increase calls on the International Olympic Committee to relocate the games unless China ends what the United States has deemed a genocide against Uyghurs and other Muslim minority groups and for its crackdown on freedom and civil liberties in Hong Kong.

President of CFHK, Mark Clifford said:

“It is unacceptable that Greece, the birthplace of democracy and a member of the European Union, actively helped China to stifle voices of dissent and protest. We are grateful for the release of these two young human rights activists, and we urge them to return to the US immediately for their own safety.

“We are thankful for the work of the US Embassy in ensuring their safety while in detention.

“Sadly, this arrest will further embolden China and encourage it to undertake such brazen tactics elsewhere. We therefore call on the EU to be firm in its stance to uphold its obligation under EU law to respect peoples’ right to protest and assembly.”

The run up to the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing have been marred by protests and calls for boycotts over the country's human rights record.

Parliamentarians and human rights groups from around the world have called on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to relocate the games unless China ends what the United States has deemed a genocide against Uyghurs and other Muslim minority groups and for its crackdown on freedom and civil liberties in Hong Kong.
