The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Travels to Scotland
Written by Mark L. Clifford
The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong’s first trip to the Scottish capital of Edinburgh showed broad cross-party support for freeing Hong Kong political prisoners and holding China accountable for its crackdown. We found strong backing for CFHK’s policies among the many Members of Scottish Parliament (MSP) whom we met from all parties – the ruling Scottish National Party, Green Party, Conservative Party, Labour Party and the Liberal Democratic Party.
MSPs will be raising issues related to Hong Kong in the coming months. These will focus on calls to release political prisoners in Hong Kong and ways in which enablers in Hong Kong – including judges – who are restricting freedom can be held to account. MSPs also expressed interest in understanding China’s political and economic influence in the Scottish economy and promised to expose and fight the bullying and coercion by mainland Chinese toward Hong Kongers that is taking place in Scotland today.
Scotland has an outsized role to play in relations with Hong Kong. There are strong historical ties, with three governors and the founders of some of Hong Kong’s most important companies coming from Hong Kong. Scotland pursues values-based policies at hoe and abroad. MSPs are committed to ensuring that their country – a place that has long exemplified freedom and liberty – remains a place that is a safe haven, where immigrants are made to feel welcome and will be protected from harassment.
Scotland is particularly eager to welcome BNO passport holders. The country of 5.2 million people faces demographic challenges and Hong Kong’s young and well-educated will find a warm welcome.

About CFHK
The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong presses for political and economic consequences for China’s failure to keep its promises to respect Hong Kong’s freedoms; supports the rule of law, freedom of expression, and the release of political prisoners; and urges the business community to stand against China’s assault on freedom and the danger it poses to Hong Kong’s status as an international financial centre. Hong Kong’s fate is linked to the preservation of freedom, democracy, and international law in the region and around the world.
