PRESS RELEASE:  The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong host event in Parliament titled “Today Hong Kong, Tomorrow the World”. Speakers include Tom Randall MP, Mark Clifford and Nathan Law.

Friday 6th May – On Wednesday the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong (CFHK) hosted a speaker's event titled “Today Hong Kong, Tomorrow the World” in the House of Commons in Westminster. The event was sponsored by Tom Randall MP, Vice-Chair of the Hong Kong All Party Parliamentary Group, and was attended by over 50 people including parliamentary assistants, NGOs, think tanks, leading activists from the Hong Kong community, members from the diplomatic corps, and several journalists.

Attendees heard CFHK President Mark Clifford and renowned Hong Kong activist Nathan Law give first-hand accounts of their encounters with the current crackdown on democracy and freedom in Hong Kong. Nathan Law spoke on Hong Kong’s unprecedented drop in the World Press Freedom Index from 80 to 148 out of 180, a sad but not surprising result following the imposition of the National Security Law in 2020.

The event brought together people who share the goal for democracy and freedom to be restored in the once free city of Hong Kong. Amongst those in attendance were Benedict Rogers, chief executive and co-founder of Hong Kong Watch, author and broadcaster Steve Vines, Sam Hogg, editor of the Beijing to Britain, and former British Ambassador Warwick Morris.

CFHK President, Mark L. Clifford, said:

“CFHK would like to thank Tom Randall MP for his hospitality and for making the event happen. The event “Today Hong Kong, Tomorrow the World” provided a great platform to discuss shared experiences of living and working in Hong Kong.

“The UK plays a vital role in defending the rights of the Hong Kong people and it was great to see such support for Hong Kongers and the BNO visa scheme, which encourages those who have fled Hong Kong to settle in the UK, at the event.

“Given the evidence of Hong Kong’s steep fall in free press, and the imminent appointment of sole “candidate” John Lee as the next Chief Executive, it is now more important than ever to fight for the people of Hong Kong.

“Events like this allow the international community to demonstrate its commitment to ending the ongoing suppression and stand up to the Chinese Communist Party. The CFHK will continue to advocate and fight for freedom in Hong Kong.”
About CFHK

The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong presses for political and economic consequences for China’s failure to keep its promises to respect Hong Kong’s freedoms; supports the rule of law, freedom of expression, and the release of political prisoners; and urges the business community to stand against China’s assault on freedom and the danger it poses to Hong Kong’s status as an international financial centre. Hong Kong’s fate is linked to the preservation of freedom, democracy, and international law in the region and around the world.
