PRESS RELEASE:

The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong and ally U.S. Hong Kong pro-democracy organisations write to party leaders about provisions in the America COMPETES Act of 2022
Last month, The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong (CFHK) and 25 other organisations that have a U.S, presence and fight for freedom and democracy in Hong Kong, wrote to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell on the provisions that had been outlined in Sec. 30303 of H.R.4521 – America COMPETES Act of 2022 which was passed by the House this month.

The provisions included in the America COMPETES Act of 2022, which passed in the House this month, would allow Hong Kongers to come to the US to “live, work, and contribute to the success of American society,” as the letter suggests. This along with S.1260 – United States Innovation and Competition Act of 2021, which was passed by the Senate last June would “represent an important step to boost U.S. competitiveness against China.”

As the bills are meant to pass with bipartisan support, the signatories urge the party leaders to act to adopt the provisions set out in Sec. 30303 of H.R.4521 “as the conference committee completes the work of reconciling the two bills toward a final package.”

CFHK along with our pro-democracy allies “will always support the U.S. in its efforts to counter the Chinese Communist Party.”

Responding, President of the CFHK, Mark L. Clifford, said:

“It is vital that the provisions in Sec. 30303 of H.R.4521 are adopted as the conference committee completes the work of reconciling the two bills toward a final package.

“Many Hong Kongers are forced to leave their home in search of a place where their basic liberties are protected, and we must stand to ensure the opportunity to find a better, freer life in a country with genuine democracy.”

The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong (CFHK) presses for political and economic consequences for China’s failure to keep its promises regarding Hong Kong’s freedoms; supports the rule of law, freedom of expression, and the release of political prisoners – and urges the business community to stand against China’s assault on freedom, which also imperils Hong Kong’s status as an international financial center. Hong Kong’s fate is linked to the preservation of freedom, democracy, and international law in the region and around the world.
