STATEMENT ON G7 MEETING:

The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong calls on the G7 to take concrete steps against Chinese repression in Hong Kong
June 10, 2021

Leaders of the G7 democracies will meet for their annual summit from June 11 to June 12 in Cornwall for the first time since China imposed the National Security Law in Hong Kong in June 2020. Since the last G7 summit, China has intensified its assault on the democracy movement, freedom of the press, and Hong Kong’s standing as an international financial center.

The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong calls on Prime Minister Boris Johnson, President Joe Biden, and other G7 leaders to adopt and expand Magnitsky-style sanctions on officials responsible for prosecuting and imprisoning Hong Kong people for their peaceful, pro-democracy activities. These sanctions should also apply to family members of the designated officials.

Ellen Bork, President of the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong stated:

“The G7 should take concrete measures in response to China’s assault on Hong Kong’s democracy movement, press freedom, and status as an international financial center especially because the group is led this year by Prime Minister Boris Johnson of the United Kingdom, which is a party to the Joint Declaration.

Neither sanctioned officials nor their families should enjoy the benefits of a free society that are denied to Hong Kong’s people. G7 democracies should adopt stronger measures in response to the National Security Law’s unchecked powers to arrest, punish, and seize assets of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy leaders – as in the case of jailed Apple Daily founder and British citizen, Jimmy Lai.

Hong Kong should also be high on the agenda of the bilateral summit between Prime Minister Boris Johnson and President Joe Biden, both of whom have expressed strong support for Hong Kong and for democracy in their foreign policies.”

Dozens of Hong Kong pro-democracy politicians and activists have been arrested for peaceful activities on subversion charges that carry potential life sentences. For the second year in a row, authorities banned the annual vigil in Hong Kong’s Victoria Park to mourn the victims of the June 4, 1989, Tiananmen Square massacre and imprisoned leading Hong Kong democrats who defied the ban last year. Authorities also froze jailed Apple Daily founder Jimmy Lai’s shares in Next Digital and other assets, stripped him of voting rights in the shares, and threatened international bankers with jail terms if they handle his shares.

The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong (CFHK) presses for political and economic consequences for China’s failure to keep its promises regarding Hong Kong’s freedoms; supports the rule of law, freedom of expression, and the release of political prisoners – and urges the business community to stand against China’s assault on freedom, which also imperils Hong Kong’s status as an international financial center. Hong Kong’s fate is linked to the preservation of freedom, democracy, and international law in the region and around the world.
