STATEMENT: UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss gives statement following new evidence of China’s human rights violations in Xinjiang
Tuesday 24 May – UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has condemned shocking new details of China’s human rights violations in Xinjiang. The evidence shows the horrifying scale of China’s targeting of Uyghur Muslims and other ethnic minorities, including forced labour, severe restrictions on freedom of religion, the separation of parents from their children, forced birth control, and mass incarceration. This adds to the already extensive body of evidence from Chinese government documents, first-hand testimony, satellite imagery and visits by the UKs diplomats to the region. The UK Foreign Secretary reiterated the UK’s longstanding expectation that China grants the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, full and unfettered access to the region.
The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong President, Mark L. Clifford, said:
“The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong supports the statement from the UK Government. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, must be granted full access to the region so that a thorough assessment of China’s human rights violations can take place.”
“The evidence of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) actions in Xinjiang are deeply alarming. The human rights violations against the Uyghur Muslims and other ethnic minorities in the region shows the depths to which the CCP will sink to maintain absolute state control.”
“The UK Government is right to lead international partners in calling out China’s appalling persecution. It is vital that democratic countries remain committed to holding China to account, both in Xinjiang and elsewhere.”
