‘I don’t think I’ve done anything illegal, but I’ve been in jail for four years.’
The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation was set up to fight for Hong Kong and its people as China continues its massive crackdown on the city. Despite legal obligations and treaties and repeated promises that Hong Kong would continue to enjoy its existing freedoms, China has since the 1997 handover from the United Kingdom destroyed Hong Kong’s free media, freedom of speech, free assembly, education, and many other aspects of the democratic way of life that had become the norm in Hong Kong.

Intensifying Repression: Beijing’s Crackdown on Hong Kong and U.S. Policy Options
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has intensified repression in Hong Kong over the last year and continues to decimate the once-respected rule of law and freedom of expression that the people of Hong Kong previously enjoyed. In 2024, Chinese and Hong Kong officials expanded the draconian National Security Law (NSL) of 2020 by imposing the Article 23 Ordinance that further criminalizes free speech and continues to strip away due process and fair trail protections. Almost two thousand political prisoners are now incarcerated, and ongoing trials target journalists, pro-democracy legislators, and ordinary Hong Kong citizens who advocate for liberty.

Beneath the Harbor: Hong Kong’s Leading Role in Sanctions Evasion
Hong Kong until recently was considered a top-tier global financial center, its influence rivalled only by New York and London. Governed by rule of law, its compliance with international standards made it a trusted partner to the world. But all that has changed. With China’s assertion of overall political control, Hong Kong now serves Beijing’s priorities, even at the cost of global security. Hong Kong’s financial and trade strengths have been co-opted by autocrats; they are now used not to connect the globe for good, but to undermine stability and subvert international laws and norms.
