Screening of She's in Jail (幸彤在監獄)
29 March 2024
You are cordially invited to a screening of She's in Jail (幸彤在監獄), co-organized by the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong (CFHK) Foundation, Hong Kong Student Advocacy Group at NYU, Human Rights in China, Humanitarian China, Lion Rock Cafe, NY4HK - New Yorkers Supporting Hong Kong and NYC852HKer.
This documentary explores facets of courage, including resilience in the face of imprisonment, the departure of love, and a strong will to remain optimistic. The courage of the main character Chow Hang Tung is driven by her moral obligation and determination to protect human rights amidst a society transitioning from democratic to authoritarian governance.
As a human rights lawyer and activist, Chow Hang Tung provided legal representation for activists and protesters both in mainland China and Hong Kong. Chow was also the organizer of the annual Tiananmen Massacre candlelight vigil. As a result, Chow ended up being jailed herself. She was charged with inciting subversion, facing potentially 10 years of imprisonment.
Filming an arrested human rights lawyer Chow Hang Tung under Hong Kong’s National Security Law, this documentary partly portrays a sharp decline in the rule of law in society. It also delves into Chow’s unwavering belief that fundamentally, the law should protect citizens.
